Marketing 101: The Art of Persuasion

Students used unique tag lines, jingles and coupon codes to entice their consumers to purchase their product.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School is dedicated to ensuring that each student is not only well equipped with an intellectual tool box for college but with one that will help him/her understand the 21st century society in which they live. Accessing that tool box from time to time with the appropriate implements will help young people design and build a successful future.

Economics teacher, Mr. Reno Burnett, is meeting both the supply and demand of his students’ inquiring minds in his latest lesson. Junior and senior students were challenged to create and present a commercial, one that would sway their “consumer peers” to purchase a reusable water bottle. Students used unique tag lines, jingles and coupon codes to entice their consumers to purchase their product.

Understanding the basics of economics helps students also understand the basics of various world markets, how markets fluctuate and the constant juggle between supply and demand. This particular marketing exercise revealed more subtle lessons of good marketing such as how to produce a product that will stand out from the competition, help the consumer, and how to identify target markets that will be receptive to the proposed product.

Today’s lessons equal tomorrow’s achievements. At STA, our students’ tool boxes are filled to the brim with lessons that hammer a greater message home, one that will tighten the screws of success firmly into place.
